Early 19th Century

A carved white jade huqqa mouthpiece inset in the kundan style in 22 carat gold and 28 foiled Burmese cabochon rubies.
Note:
Tobacco, introduced to India by the Portuguese in the early 1500s, was often smoked using a huqqa (hookah). The mouthpiece was the personal component used to draw smoke through a water vessel and into the mouth via a long, flexible tube.
As the most intimate part of the apparatus, the Mughal evolved into a significant status symbol and was frequently depicted in courtly portraiture. This example, made of high-quality white jade and adorned with gold and Burmese rubies, would have been owned and used by nobility.
煙草由葡萄牙人於十六世紀初傳入印度，當時普遍使用「胡卡」（huqqa，即水煙）吸食。煙嘴作為水煙裝置的個人使用部件，通過一條長而柔軟的軟管，將煙霧經由水缽過濾後吸入使用者口中。
作為這套器具中最貼近個人的部分，「蒙哈爾」（munhal，即煙嘴）逐漸發展為重要的身份象徵，並經常出現在宮廷肖像畫中。本例以高品質白玉製成，飾以黃金及緬甸紅寶石，應為貴族階級所擁有及使用。
