Mr. & Mrs. Dayrell Kortheuer
Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina, gift from the above, 1967 (as Flemish, late 17th century, School of Frankenthaler, Crucifixion)
Sold: Jackson's International Auctioneers, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, June 16, 2015, Lot 289 (as Circle of Karel Van Mander (Dutch, 1548-1606))
Acquired from the above sale by the present owner
Lot Note:
The present lot was created within the tradition of dozijnschilderen, where modestly talented artists were employed by art dealers to create large numbers of inexpensive, quickly executed, cabinet-size paintings that feature popular subjects, often taken from the Bible. We wish to thank the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, also known as R.K.D., for their kind assistance in cataloguing the present painting.
Framed: 19 1/2 x 22 3/4 in.
Minor deposits of surface dirt and dust; a network of hairline craquelures throughout the surface; one very small paint loss in the upper right corner; a horizontal seam running through the foreground, accompanied by inpainting, mostly visible only under raking light; small spots of inpainting visible within the sky under normal viewing conditions; under a highly reflective varnish. Under UV light: the aforementioned horizontal line of inpainting in the foreground fluoresces; the upper left corner has inpainting approximately 2 x 1 inches in area; spots of inpainting throughout the sky, ranging from pinpoint to approximately 1/2 x 1/2 inches; scattered lines of inpainting to address craquelures through the center and along the lower foreground. Additional images available upon request.
