Lot Note:
Emma Fordyce MacRae painted her still lifes in New York and Gloucester, with occasional, subtle indications making the locale identifiable. The present work depicts the artist's living room on Park Avenue in New York City, where she moved after her marriage to Homer Swift. The coffee table depicted in this painting is an original work by Max Kuehne, a colleague and friend of MacRae who often crafted frames for her paintings. Dogwood in Hopi was painted between May and June of 1954, and slightly reworked in March, 1956.
